Morning Briefing for pub, restaurant and food wervice operators

Wed 26th Nov 2014 - Exclusive: ETM Group to open first brewpub
Exclusive: ETM Group to open first brewpub: ETM Group, the gastro-pub operator led by Ed and Tom Martin, is to open its first brewpub, the Ealing Park Tavern in South Ealing in mid-December. The new brewpub, the company 13th site, will supply beer to other pubs in the ETM estate. The brewpub will be located at a pub that is on the site of a historic brewery in Ealing, which will also offer eight boutique bedrooms. The historic 5,000 square foot pub, part of the London Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors and once the Lewis Furnell Brewhouse, brewing its own beers from 1728 until the mid 1800s, is currently undergoing an extensive refurbishment and full refit. The venue will be a gastro-pub with an open plan kitchen, 60-cover dining room, large bar, two flexible private events spaces and a huge garden with three cabanas. Key design features include a polished timber bar, reclaimed timber flooring, a mix of seating that includes red leather banquettes, tub chairs and a theatre kitchen behind a smoked glass screen. The brewpub’s range of beers will include bitters, pale ales and seasonal brews. The Ealing Park Tavern Brewmaster will be available for brewery tours, tastings and food and beer matching dinners. An extensive list of over 100 accessible wines, including those from its enomatic wine dispenser, sits alongside the home-brewed ales, premium bottled lagers, cider, spirits and classic cocktails. Average spend per head for a three-course meal with wine will be circa £35. Tom Martin, co-founder of ETM Group, said: “We are extremely excited about this launch and to be brewing our own ales for the very first time. Ealing Park Tavern will be very much a neighbourhood pub serving the local community with quality food, drink and service as well as an ever-evolving roster of events.” The site is a former Town and Country Pub Company outlet. The pub closed in April, a year after the collapse into administration of its then owner, Town and Country. Six months later, the pub, along with five other Town and Country outlets, was put up for sale by the property agent Colliers on the instructions of Town and Country’s administrator, O’Hara. A fortnight ago, Propel reported ETM Group saw turnover rise to £18.05m in the year to 28 February 2014, up from £16.5m the year before. Pre-tax profit was £886,000, compared from £608,000 in 2012/3. The company sold its Prince Arthur pub after the year-end. The company reported its Canary Wharf, One Canada Square site is “growing steadily after a slow start”. Overall gross profit percentage rose from 40.8% to 41.6% in the year. Last week, Propel reported ETM Group has signed up to take an 8,180 square foot terrace bar on a 20-year lease for a second Botanist site, this time located at British Land’s Broadgate Circle development and expected to open in March 2015. Of the Broadgate Circle opening, Tom Martin said: “We are really impressed at both the quality of the scheme and the calibre of brands involved. The Botanist on Sloane Square is one of our busiest London bar and restaurants and the brand is ideally suited to the clientele of Broadgate and The City in general. We are delighted to bring this highly successful format to such a prominent and prestigious City location.”
