Pubs Minister launches ‘Badge of Honour’ for pubs in effort to curb closure: The Community Pubs Minister Marcus Jones MP has launched a new campaign to protect England’s most treasured community pubs from demolition or conversion to other uses by presenting the first “Badge of Honour” to a licensee. Jones presented the first “This Pub Matters” badge to Tina Massie of The Red Lion pub at the Campaign For Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Great British Beer Festival in London yesterday (Monday, 10 August) – the first of what CAMRA hopes will be 3,000 pubs protected under the initiative. The launch of the initiative came as new statistics released today (Tuesday, 11 August) show neighbourhood “suburban” pubs are bearing the brunt of pub closures with a whopping 17 of the 29 a week being in this category, compared to nine in rural locations and just three on the high street. This has prompted CAMRA and the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) to launch the joint initiative to protect England’s most valued pubs – those listed as “Assets of Community Value” (ACV). CAMRA chief executive Tim Page said: “Pubs achieve ACV status by local people coming together and listing the pub as an asset. It is a badge of honour, a mark of quality and a crystal clear sign that the pub is valued by locals. With pub closure figures remaining high, and new figures showing 17 suburban pubs are lost each week, it’s even more vital that pubs are given protection by the government and that communities are given a say before they are demolished or converted.” The 800 pubs already listed as ACVs will receive the quality mark, which states “This Pub Matters”, with CAMRA looking to increase that number to 3,000 by the end of 2016. It is encouraging more community groups, pub-regulars and CAMRA branches to nominate their local pub and ensure it is protected in the future.

Host of industry executives to join panel discussion at Bar and Nightclub Conference: A host of leading sector executives will join a panel discussion at the Bar and Nightclub Conference, which is being held on Tuesday, 27 October at Bafta Piccadilly. Fleet Street Communications managing director Mark Stretton will talk to Reuben Harley, chief executive of Eclectic, Alex Hazzard, co-founder of the Burning Night Group, Luke Johnson, of Risk Capital Partners, Andrew Stones, operations director for Be At One, and Adam Marshall, founder of Grand Union Group, about the prospects for the bar and nightclub sector, the regions, digital marketing and changing patterns of bar and nightclub usage. Rise of craft breweries in US leading to stronger beers: The rise of craft breweries in the US, whose sales grew 22% to $19.6bn in 2014 and continued a four-year run of double digit growth, is driving a sea change in American palates with heavier doses of alcohol. “As craft beer was growing, it seemed that ABV (alcohol by volume) grew with it,” said Justin Dolezal, beer buyer for Buzz Wine Beer Shop in downtown Los Angeles. Consumer research group Mintel found the amount of beers released with more than 6.5% ABV increased by 319% in North America from 2011 to 2014, with 46% of new beer releases falling into this category. The average alcohol content of craft beer is 5.9% ABV.

Vibrant bar and nightclub scene in Vauxhall under threat from redevelopment: The vibrant gay bar and nightclub scene in London’s Vauxhall is under threat from redevelopment, an agent has claimed. Old buildings and warehouses have been flattened and replaced with a series of tower blocks featuring luxury apartments, commercial space and the prestigious new American Embassy, which is due to open next year. But the redevelopment, with 11 tower blocks currently under construction, is threatening the gay night life that has built up around the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (RVT), which has been scheduled for demolition. The iconic tavern, which Princess Diana allegedly visited dressed as a man with Freddie Mercury in the 1980s, is just one of several clubs and bars facing closure. Bar Code has closed its doors and the pressure to redevelop will encourage landlords to sell their land or refurbish properties to command higher rents, it is claimed. Campaigners are fighting to keep the RVT open and have the building listed by Historic England so it is protected. Another club Area was closed after landlord Network Rail decided to redevelop the site. “There has been a surge of building along the south bank around Vauxhall and the area is heading upmarket fast,” said Salvatore Di Natale, of agent CDG Leisure. “The area is becoming gentrified and the owners of buildings that have gay bars and nightclubs are looking to maximise their potential. It would be the same whatever type of bar or club was the leaseholder but it is a worry for many that part of London’s culture will disappear as this new business and residential area takes shape.”

US restaurant industry saw 1.6% like-for-like growth in July: The third quarter started on a positive note for the US restaurant industry as July results represented the 13th consecutive month of positive like-for-like store sales. Like-for-like sales growth of 1.6% did, however, drop 0.5% below June’s results. This insight comes from data reported by TDn2K’s Black Box Intelligence through The Restaurant Industry Snapshot, based on weekly sales from over 22,000 restaurant units and 120 brands representing $55bn in annual revenue. “Even though sales growth slowed slightly from the previous month, results still reflect positive growth for the industry,” said Victor Fernandez, executive director of insights and knowledge for TDn2K. “Even more encouraging for chain restaurants is the fact that the industry experienced a small improvement in same-store traffic and relied less on increasing guest checks to achieve the positive July numbers. However, the industry continues to experience declining guest counts and this remains a top concern.”

Michel Roux Junior-backed Growing Underground returns to crowdfunding:
Growing Underground, the farm project backed by Michel Roux Junior that plans to utilise two unused underground World War Two shelters in Clapham to produce leafy greens, has returned to Crowdcube to raise a further £200,000 in return for 8% of its equity. The farm consists of 600 square metres of growing space that will have doubled by the end of the year, a food production picking and packing area, propagation rooms, research and development facilities, cold storage and bio security measures. The pitch states: “We are now fundraising to finalise the supply of produce to wholesale and end-user consumers. To achieve our goal of producing crops that are consumed by all, we need to install a higher specification packing and processing system that can achieve the volumes required by retailers.” The business plan forecasts turnover of £3,852,353 and Ebitda of £1,974,680.

Springboard seeks teams for charity London to Paris cycle ride: The hospitality industry charity Springboard is seeking teams of four people for its London to Paris cycle ride next month. The Team Velo Challenge between London St Pancras and the Eiffel Tower in Paris takes place from 17 to 19 September. Teams can choose their own route between checkpoints and will be monitored on a tracking device with support vehicles on hand to provide assistance. Registration is £395, which includes welcome breakfast, Team Velo cycle jersey, barbecue dinner and accommodation on the second night, champagne reception in Paris and snacks and drinks throughout the ride. It does not include the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen on the first night or the journey home from Paris. By registering, each cyclist commits to raising a minimum of £500 with all funds going to support the work of Springboard. Abokado celebrating 25th store opening by selling pots of frozen yoghurt for 25p tomorrow: Abokado, the healthy food company led by Mark Lilley, is marking the opening of its 25th store by selling pots of frozen yoghurt for 25p across all its sites tomorrow (Wednesday, 12 August). The company has opened its latest site in Goswell Road, London and is celebrating the landmark by offering the product, one of the only 100% fat-free frozen yoghurts available in the UK, at the special price. Lilley said: “We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved over the past few years. With this opening it feels as if our baby has finally left its toddler stage and is now marching towards its teenage years.” Lilley is aiming to have 30 stores by the end of the company’s financial year in March 2016.

Epic Pub Company confirms first acquisition: Epic Pub Company, the new gastro-pub company that has secured £5m of EIS scheme backing, has confirmed the acquisition of the freehold of The Golden Ball, Pinkneys Green, Maidenhead, for £1.1m through agent Christie +Co. The substantial 16th century property is set in its own grounds of approximately one acre and is in exceptional order throughout having undergone a stylish overhaul by the outgoing vendors. Andrew Coath, managing director of Epic Pubs, said: “We are very pleased to get this venture off the ground. There are a lot of food and drink offers in the Maidenhead area but we are bringing something different to the market and we will be serving quality food in a stand-out environment.” Tim Widdows of Christie + Co’s Reading office, added: “Typical of the transactional marketplace in freehold pubs at the moment, the sale of The Golden Ball generated significant interest, particularly as it offered new owners the opportunity to seamlessly take over an already successful business. We would like to congratulate Epic Pubs on this excellent acquisition and we wish them every success in the future.”

Sam Smith’s acquires second Cumbria pub: North Yorkshire-based brewer and retailer Sam Smith’s has acquired its second pub in Cumbria, which is set to reopen after being closed for more than two years. The company, run by Humphrey Smith, has bought The Magpie Inn in Victoria Road, Botcherby, which shut in June 2013, from Barnsley-based Oakwell Brewery. Before the sale, Oakwell invested £400,000 opening fireplaces, restoring the bar and oak panelling and Sam Smith’s is planning further refurbishment once it finds a local couple to train to manage the pub. It also plans to restore the pub’s bowling green. The advert on Gumtree said: “Couples with local roots must have enthusiasm and be able to create the welcoming social atmosphere to make the pub successful and the heart of the local community.” Sam Smith’s, which owns about 200 pubs across the country all stocked with the brewery’s own range of beers and spirits, also has a site in Heversham in south Lakeland, Cumbria.

Sally Fox acquires iconic London music venue: Iconic London music venue The Water Rats has been sold by agent Davis Coffer Lyons to Sally Fox, who previously ran the successful Soho nightclub Moonlighting, for a premium of £150,000 and a rent of £90,000 per annum. The venue, on Gray’s Inn Road near King’s Cross, was previously the haunt of Lenin and Karl Marx, the latter of which had a flat on the upper floors. It then became one of the capital’s premier live music venues with performances from some of the biggest names in music including Bob Dylan, Oasis, The Pogues, Katy Perry and Alanis Morisette. The venue will undergo a substantial refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory with a quirky modern design. Once reopened The Water Rats will provide an all-day gastro service from breakfast and coffee in the morning to real ale and cocktails in the evening. There will also be performances from some of the biggest bands in the country, with some being broadcast live on television as well as book launches and a series of other events. Paul Tallentyre, executive director at Davis Coffer Lyons, said: “Despite concerns about the closure of this type of property, The Water Rats will continue to operate as a late night music venue, which highlights the opportunities in the sector for the right property and operation. It is a truly iconic venue, which – coupled with Sally’s extensive knowledge of operating similar venues – will help to ensure that the venue continues to attract top quality bands and music lovers for years to come.” Fox said: “We are ecstatic to be running such an iconic venue and are passionate about continuing the live music and comedy nights as well as introducing a new gastro food offer. This is a match made in heaven and we look forward to carrying on The Grand Order of the Water Rats’ legacy.”

McDonald’s to trial table service at dozen UK restaurants by the end of this month: McDonald’s will be trialling table service at a dozen UK restaurants by the end of August after starting the trial at a branch in Mottram, Greater Manchester. The company said it hopes the service will provide customers with a more relaxed, modern dining experience. It has trialled table service in restaurants in France, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. While McDonald’s has enjoyed 37 consecutive quarters of growth in the UK, it is in decline in its home market of the US.

Merlin lodges plans for third hotel at Alton Towers: Merlin Entertainments has lodged plans for a third hotel at its Alton Towers resort – two months after the Staffordshire attraction was temporarily shut following a rollercoaster crash. The company has applied to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council to build the four-storey hotel featuring 74 “colonial-style” family rooms, a 200-seat restaurant, cafe and car park, creating 100 jobs. The hotel, which is set to open in 2017, would be built next to the Alton Towers Hotel and Spa and comes after the Enchanted Village boasting 120 lodges and eight tree houses opened earlier this year. Hotel operations director Janet Gurr told the Stoke Sentinel: “While it’s something we’ve been considering for a long time, we believe the time is now ripe to expand our offering to cater to even more guests in search of the perfect short break.” Merlin saw £47m wiped from its profits in the wake of the Smiler rollercoaster accident in June that left four people seriously injured and led to the temporary closure of the park.

Beatles-themed hotel in Liverpool acquired for £13.8m: The 110-bedroom Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool has sold for almost £3m more than the asking price. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels (M&C) has agreed to purchase a long leasehold interest in the Hard Days Night Hotel for £13.8m in cash. More than 113 years remain on the lease with Liverpool City Council. The property is located inside the grade II-listed Central Buildings on the corner of Mathew Street and North John Street. Named after the Beatles’ film, album and song of the same name, the Hard Days Night Hotel opened its doors in 2008 during Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture. In addition to 110 luxury rooms, including the famed McCartney and Lennon suites, the hotel has numerous bars and restaurants. The four-star hotel features exclusive Beatles artwork throughout, including along the grand central staircase from the basement to the roof. The hotel was put on the market in March with CBRE indicating that it was seeking bids of more than £11m on behalf of its private owner Concord Estates. Kwek Leng Beng, chairman of M&C’s board of directors, said: “This unique acquisition, which will be supported by M&C’s existing management infrastructure, further expands the group’s hotel portfolio to one of the leading leisure and business destinations in the UK. The city is undergoing an economic regeneration and we are proud to be a part of that.”

Sushi brand Bonzai to expand into Leicester: Sushi brand Bonzai is to expand by opening a second site in Leicester. The Nottingham branch, in Carton Street, opened about seven years ago. The second restaurant is on the site of the former Le Petit Four cafe on the junction of Hotel Street and Horsefair Street. Qun Lu, a manager at the Nottingham branch, said: “The Nottingham restaurant has been doing very well – customers love it and they come back again and again. A lot of people from all sorts of backgrounds enjoy sushi. We’re in a city centre restaurant in Nottingham and we think Hotel Street in Leicester will also be a very good location.”

Cafe bar dedicated to vaping opens in Derby: A new cafe-bar in Derby dedicated to giving electronic cigarette users a place to relax and meet is the first venue of its kind in the city. Vapey Jacks Vape Lounge and Bottle Bar opened on Saturday in Green Lane and business owner Blake Lowis said it is not just the first in Derby – it’s one of the first in the Midlands. “The nearest one I am aware of is in Birmingham,” added former University of Derby student Lowis. He has launched the business with brother Mark and has been delighted by the response so far. “Derby has a vapers (e-cigarette users) group and they have already been in touch with us. We are holding a Derby Vapers meeting on Saturday. We have created a relaxed, adult environment where vapers can use their electronic devices. It’s also a place where people can seek advice on harm reduction – switching from smoking to vaping. We can help educate their choice and provide all the necessary materials and support. As well as selling our own brand of coffee and craft beers, we repair and sell e-cigarettes.”

Handmade Burger Co plans Newcastle opening: Handmade Burger Co is opening a new restaurant in Newcastle in Intu Eldon Square’s new multi-million pound dining development. The company has applied for a late night refreshment licence until 12.30am, Monday to Sunday, at Unit HF3 at the High Friars, Grey’s Quarter, Intu Eldon Square, as part of the shopping centre’s new restaurant development. The restaurant company will join 20 other operators, including TGI Friday’s, Giraffe and Bella Italia in a new multi-million pound dining space at Intu Eldon Square. Owner Chris Sargeant said: “Newcastle is such a vibrant city and we are really excited to be opening our second restaurant in the city in 2016. Our opening in Intu Eldon Square will be our 26th restaurant in the UK after our openings in Grand Central Station, Birmingham, and Intu Nottingham in autumn 2015.”

Nick Batram – Domino’s is a great business but the shares look fully valued: Peel Hunt leisure analyst has issued a ‘Hold’ note on Domino’s shares with a price target of 950p. He said: “We update our forecasts following the recent interims where Domino’s posted an impressive 10.3% like-for-like growth in the UK; losses in Germany were also lower than expected but nevertheless, there is still much to done here. Our FY15 earnings per share number is nudged circa 3% higher, with FY16 +2%. The shares have bounded north since the update and trade quite full on circa 29x FY15 price-earnings ratio, we retain our ‘Hold’ recommendation but move our target price to 950p. We are nudging up our forecasts following the strong interim statement posted by Domino’s, upgrading our FY15 system sales to circa £861m in the statutory sales of £331m and profit before tax of c£65m. This is predominantly driven by the UK and lower than expected losses in Germany. The company will face tougher comparatives quarter three and quarter four (12.9% and 9.9% respectively), but with the improvements in digital and increased marketing investment and a re-energised franchisee base; we expect the company to be able to generate circa 8% in like-for-like sales for the full year. Although losses in Germany reduced in half one (£1.8m versus £4.7m), the business continues to struggle. Management are rightly focusing on proving the store level economics before focusing on the roll-out strategy but profitability looks some way off. We estimate losses of circa £3.9m for the FY to December 2015, compared to our previous expectation of £4.8m (currency is helpful here). Management are investing circa £35m in two new commissaries and some of this will fall into half two of this year with the brunt being invested in FY16, as well as a circa £8m investment in the Enterprise Resource Planning systems in FY16. Cash flow remains strong and we expect year-end net cash of circa £26m – raising the potential for further buybacks. Domino’s Pizza is a great business and the investment in the digital platform continues to deliver – with more to come. However, the share price looks up with events with our country based discounted cash flow value being 950p. This ascribes no value to Germany, therefore if management can turn the business around the upside would be more substantial.”

New restaurant headed by Michelin-experienced chef to open in Newport:
A new restaurant, Mojo The FoodBar, with Michelin-experienced chef, Andy Beaumont, in the kitchen, is to open in Newport’s Clarence House this week. Beaumont previously worked at Michelin star restaurant Tyddn Llan under head chef and owner Bryan Webb. He has also worked in key roles at Michelin-starred and three AA rosette restaurants such as The Hamborough, on the Isle of Wight; Lower Slaughter Manor, in the Cotswolds and at Hammet House, Cardigan. He also appeared in BBC’s Great British Menu D-Day 70 memorial programme in 2014. Beaumont said: “I was attracted to Mojo the FoodBar because of the amazing chance that it offers to cook my own food to a very high standard. I am very excited by the challenge and also to be able to remain here in Wales where we can source some of the very best produce that the UK has to offer.”

Pret A Manger owner considers US listing: Pret A Manger’s private equity owner Bridgepoint is looking to ramp up overseas profits before selling out and is considering a US listing as one option. “The US values restaurant concepts differently,” a private equity source told Reuters. “It’s a much more receptive market.” Shake Shack and Chipotle Mexican Grill are trading at an average enterprise value to core earnings (Ebitda) multiple of 16.9 times, against 9.5 times for British firms like The Restaurant Group. Pret had core earnings of £76m in 2014 – a US listing at those multiples would value it at £1.28bn – over half a billion more than at a UK multiple. Bridgepoint paid £345m for a 53% share in Pret in 2008. It currently owns 65% after buying out Goldman Sachs, which advised it on the acquisition. Pret’s management and founders own 35%. Pret’s core earnings rose 14% in 2014. In 2013 it raised a £375m loan to refinance existing debt and pay a £150m dividend to owners. “We said at the time of the refinancing in 2013 that we would extend our holding period for Pret,” Bridgepoint partner and spokesman James Murray said in an emailed statement. “No decision has been taken about the type or timing of exit.”

Thornbridge to take over Craft Beer Co site for a week: Thornbridge Brewery is taking part in London Beer City celebrations this week by mounting a “Thornbridge Week” at Craft Beer Co’s Clerkenwell (Leather Lane) pub until Sunday, 16 August. It will offer 14 cask and 20 keg lines with beers rotating all week. Martin Hayes, owner of the Craft Beer Co, said: “(I am) thrilled to turn our iconic first site into the London home of Thornbridge brewery for a week long showcase and tap takeover. 35 Thornbridge beers on Tap for seven days is a bold and exciting endeavour sure to capture the attentions of London discerning drinkers.”

Gower Brewery invests £1m to expand: The Gower Brewery in Swansea is to create 20 jobs following a £1m investment in new premises and machinery. A six-figure private investment from owners Matt Joslin, Paul Chiverton, Chris Stevens, and Chris Mabbett has been supplemented by a loan from HSBC, a £300,000 package from Finance Wales and a grant from the Welsh government. The brewery has previously been based at the Greyhound Inn in Llanrhidian. The funding will be used to establish a new 15,000 sq ft base at Crofty Industrial Estate in Penclawdd. The business also plans to create a visitor centre and develop international markets. It has bought a £250,000 state-of-the-art brewing kit, custom-made in Germany, which has increased capacity from five to 20 barrels and created six jobs. Up to 14 more jobs will be created over the next two years as the bottling line comes on-stream in late 2015 and the visitor centre opens in January 2016.

Talash Hotels buys country house hotel for £1.45m: Talash Hotels has acquired a country house hotel in Derbyshire, set in an 11th century Saxon country house and adjoining annexe with ten acres of landscaped grounds, for £1.45m. Grade II-listed Risley Hall Hotel in Risley has been acquired by Talash Hotels, which also owns the Baron’s Court hotel in Walsall, the Allesley Hotel in Coventry and the Falstaff Hotel in Leamington Spa. It has taken over the 35-bedroom property from Flodrive Properties, a business led by property investor Tony Khalastchi. Real estate adviser Savills represented Flodrive. Tom Cunningham, hotels director at Savills, said: “Risley Hall is an established business in a tourist hot spot which provides the new owner with significant potential for long term income thanks to the range of facilities on offer. We are very pleased with the strong sale price achieved.” The three-star hotel, which also features a restaurant, two bars and spa facilities including an indoor swimming pool as well as large landscaped gardens.

Turtle Bay lines up Huddersfield opening:
Caribbean restaurant and bar chain Turtle Bay has applied for a licence change to open a Huddersfield branch, looking to convert the former Cotton Factory building. The brand, which recently opened a second branch in Manchester, has put in an application to Kirklees Council to change the premises licence of the King Street/Zetland Street venue.

ETM Group hires Nick Ward as head chef for Ealing Park Tavern:
London restaurant operator ETM Group has hired Nick Ward as head chef of Ealing Park Tavern in South Ealing. Ward has worked in a number of London’s Michelin-starred restaurants under some of the UK’s most respected chefs, including Marcus Wareing and Bjorn van der Horst. James Lyon Shaw, operations director of ETM Group, said: “We are thrilled to have Nick on board, bringing his wealth of impressive experience to create a menu that outshines traditional gastro-pub food. Nick has worked at some of the most well-established restaurants in London and we are confident he will lead the team at Ealing Park Tavern in an exciting new direction.”
 
Orderella boss – nightclubs need to embrace technology: Mobile payment app Orderella’s chief executive Dennis Collet has linked the closure of almost half of the UK’s nightclubs in ten years to their failure to embrace technology. He said: “It’s sad to see so many nightclubs closing because they have been such a big part of the UK nightlife scene. It’s bound to have a big impact on local economies up and down the country too. What seems to be apparent is that they need to keep evolving to fit with the times.  We recently worked with the ALMR on a survey about how consumers want to use technology in licensed venues, including nightclubs. There’s a huge issue around investment in technology to keep them relevant to the next generation of clubbers. One of the issues with nightclubs has always been having to stand in long queues – this doesn’t fit with today’s ‘mobile’ generation who are used to having things at a click of a button. The younger consumers we spoke to as part of our report proved this – they want to pay using their phones, skip long queues at the bar, use the venues’ Wi-Fi for free. This can’t be ignored if nightclubs want to keep getting the new generations through the door.”
