Time Out plans global food market roll-out with hire of ex-Hakkasan executive: Time Out Group, the brand that aims to “inspire and enable people to make the best of their city”, has hired Didier Souillat, former executive vice-president at Hakkasan Group, as chief executive of Time Out Market. In his new role, Souillat will lead the international expansion of Time Out Market to vibrant cities such as London and New York where Time Out is a “trusted cultural guide for consumer”. The original market, Time Out Market Lisboa at Mercado da Ribeira in Lisbon, is a 70,000 square foot market hall that brings together some of the city’s favourite food shops, restaurants and cultural happenings. It attracts 35,000 to 60,000 people per week during peak season, and is now the number one shopping destination in the city on TripAdvisor. Time Out Market aims to bring together the best of each city under one roof – the most exciting chefs and bars, plus innovative arts and cultural events. Leveraging Time Out’s presence in 107 cities across 39 countries and its monthly global audience reach of over 100 million across all platforms, the markets will also showcase new culinary talent from around the world. Time Out Market is also exploring expansion into other cities where Time Out is a respected cultural guide, such as Berlin, Miami, Paris, Chicago and Amsterdam. Before Hakkasan, Souillat held top management positions at companies such as Harrods, Selfridges, Daylesford Organic and Intercontinental Hotels. He also holds a degree from the renowned Hotel Management School of Lausanne. On his appointment, Souillat said: “Time Out is today one of the most trusted authorities in cities across the world; the first place people look to go and discover the best restaurants, bars and cultural experiences. Now Time Out Market is bringing the best of the Time Out experience directly to consumers.” Lord Stuart Rose, chairman of Time Out Market added: “Didier brings a considerable level of experience at the very top of the retail and hospitality world, and we are delighted to have him on board. Didier upheld the Michelin-starred quality of the dining experience at Hakkasan as the group expanded globally, and has an acute understanding of the consumer through his time at Harrods and Daylesford Organic. He will be building a team in the coming months to continue the global expansion of the Time Out Market concept.” The news comes three months after Time Out Group announced the appointment of Lord Rose as chairman of Time Out Market.
