Wadworth trials new retail franchise agreement: Brewer and retailer Wadworth is piloting a new retail franchise agreement. The company is trialling the scheme at the refurbished The Black Horse in the village of Sowton, near Exeter. Wadworth will pay all operating expenses, while the business partner will retain a percentage of turnover to cover staffing costs and their own costs. The agreement is a mix of both a traditional tenancy and a managed house agreement without the normal capital investment required for a tenancy. A spokeswoman told Propel it was not known if the pilot scheme would be extended. Wadworth has invested £350,000 to refurbish the pub in Honiton Road, which features new decor and furnishings. The restaurant now forms part of the whole trading space, and a theatre-style kitchen has been created that allows customers to see the chefs preparing their food. The exterior of the pub has been redesigned, with a small outside drinking area added to the front of the building. The pub has belonged to Wadworth since 2010 and was the company’s first site in Devon. Lloyd Stephens, operations director of tenanted pubs at Wadworth, told the Exeter Express & Echo: “We are thrilled with the outcome of the refurbishment of The Black Horse in Sowton. It changes the whole feel of the pub, creating a new atmosphere families can enjoy. We have a new menu at the pub, bringing it in line with our Family Dining sites, and a comprehensive range of beers, lagers, wines and spirits. The Black Horse now has an offering for everybody.” As well as its brewery, family-run Wadworth operates 240 pubs across the southern regions of England.

BBPA – revised alcohol guidance fails ‘common sense test’: The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has said the revised alcohol guidance fails the “common sense test”. Earlier this year, chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies said the recommended drinking limit should be 14 units a week for both men and women but there was no safe level of alcohol. While the government has moved away from defining that any level of alcohol consumption is fundamentally unsafe, it will still lower the limit to the one recommended by Dame Sally. Commenting on the government’s response to the public consultation to the revised guidelines, BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “Whilst these revisions have moved away from defining any level of alcohol consumption as fundamentally unsafe, it is disappointing that moderate drinking is not recognised as comparable in risk to many day-to-day activities. The guidance fails the ‘common sense test’, and doesn’t provide consumers with a fully objective picture, given that so many studies have shown that moderate drinking can form part of a healthy lifestyle. Ultimately, this makes it harder to engage with consumers to encourage responsible drinking.”
Agents appointed to seek operators for leisure element of £500m East Croydon development: Agents have been appointed to seek operators for the leisure and retail elements of Stanhope and Schroder UK Real Estate’s £500m development next to East Croydon train station. Agents Bruce Gillingham Pollard and CF Commercial have been instructed to seek an eclectic mix of tenants for the scheme. Craig Fisher, founder and managing director of CF Commercial, told Property Week: “Ruskin Square will help propel Croydon to become one of London’s leading boroughs, and we’re looking forward to bringing some of that east London edge to what promises to be an exciting development.” Tracey Pollard, director at Bruce Gillingham Pollard, added: “Initially, the offer will complement the catering provision at Boxpark, while longer-term the tenant mix will provide a full range of leisure, lifestyle brands and dining, set within a first-class public realm.” Schroder UK Real Estate fund manager James Lass said: “We are excited to reach this milestone and bring CF Commercial and Bruce Gillingham Pollard on board to work with us to bring an eclectic mix of new brands to the area.” Savills and JLL are the retained agents for the office space for Ruskin Square.
Plans revealed for £11m revamp of former ABC cinema in Liverpool into music venue, bars and restaurants: Plans have been unveiled for an £11m revamp of the former ABC cinema in Liverpool city centre to transform it into a music venue, bars and restaurants. It follows the start of work on the regeneration of Lime Street’s eastern terrace, with developer Neptune set to table the ABC planning application with the city council, possibly next month. If approved, the grade II-listed former cinema will be converted to include a music venue, television broadcast facilities, bars and restaurants, with the flexibility to host all kinds of live music events. The latest scheme has been revealed following the recent decision by the Court of Appeal to reject a bid by Save Britain’s Heritage to overturn planning permission for Neptune’s £39m regeneration of Lime Street. “We couldn’t make progress with a planning application until we were certain work could go ahead on the eastern terrace,” Neptune Developments managing director Steve Parry told The Business Desk. “But starting work gives confidence to investors that the ABC project is going to form part of a much wider regeneration programme.” The building occupies a prominent corner position sweeping around from Lime Street into Elliot Street, which is currently undergoing a £3.5m road surface improvement scheme. The plan’s unveiling follows Liverpool City Council’s recent announcement of a £45m city centre connectivity programme, which proposes to remodel Lime Street to reduce bus traffic and expand St George’s plateau. The ABC cinema opened in 1931 as the Forum Cinema and was a fixture of the city centre entertainment scene until it closed in 1998.
Bibendum launches data tool to identify on-trade drinks trends as they emerge: UK drinks distributor Bibendum’s insights team has created a data tool to capture on-trade wine trends as they emerge. It will be used to select the product line-up for the company’s autumn customer tastings next month. Rather than relying on sales data, which doesn’t reveal trends until after they have begun, the new tool – Mode – analyses the latest wine lists from market-leading venues to pick up on how the industry is developing. It then tracks these influences to follow how they take hold and spread. With this information, Bibendum can identify future trends before they start and advise customers looking to add something different to their list. Bibendum marketing director Mat Bird said: “We can help our customers create lists that will not only raise their profiles as trailblazers but also help them sell more as a result of being ahead of the trend.” Head of market insight Alex Linsley added that Mode was not restricted to the on-trade as the data could show off-trade teams what competitors had sold and tell them what was likely to sell in the future.

The pedometer measures steps and blinks quickly or slowly depending on the pace of the person wearing it. However, the company has now issued a recall of roughly 3.6 million wristbands in Canada and 29 million in the US. McDonald’s told customers they could have a free replacement toy and a yogurt tube or bag of apple slices if they returned the wristbands to a restaurant in person.

Adnams begins archiving project: Suffolk brewer and retailer Adnams has started an archive project to record and organise items and documents collected since the company was founded in 1872. Adnams has brought in Patsy Dallas, a professional archivist, to help with the work. She has spent time in a variety of locations around the company’s home town of Southwold, finding items ranging from deeds of long-closed pubs, bottles of beer (still sealed) and even some vintage bicycles. All the items will be catalogued, photographed and safely stored. A lot of the materials reveal social history as well as that of the Adnams brewery – one find includes documents relating to the Fox and Goose in Fressingfield when the pub was owned by the local church. The company said: “We are fortunate that in the past a lot of items have been carefully kept and we will make sure we are doing the same in the future. Archive materials have already inspired the design of the Jack Brand beer range and will be used in the redesign of The Swan Hotel in Southwold in 2017.” Visitors can see a selection of items from Adnams’ history on display at the start of their brewery and distillery tour.
Edison – building blocks in place for Rank Group: International equity research firm Edison has said the building blocks are in place for Rank Group. Issuing its update, Edison stated: “A weak quarter four left final results a tad below our forecasts despite good results in Mecca venues and Grosvenor digital. However, cash generation was strong and the dividend was lifted by 16%. The organic growth strategy (focusing on multi-channel development) remains intact and while the failure to progress what would have been a transformational acquisition of William Hill (with 888) was a disappointment, it demonstrates the scale of management’s ambitions. We suspect that future accretive opportunities will arise within the consolidating online gambling space. Rank’s shares have fallen from a 2016 peak of 295.5p (on 8 January) weighed by concerns over UK consumer spending, disappointment over Mecca’s digital migration issues, and uncertainty around the William Hill situation. However, the rating now looks too low, with annualised 2016 estimated EV/Ebitda only 6.9 times versus 11.9 times for the peer group, suggesting good upside potential. We are hopeful of a positive quarter one 2017 interim management statement in mid-October, which would be a positive catalyst.”

Rainbow Casino Cardiff general manager Richard Phillips told Insider Media: “Our new-look casino will have something for everyone looking for a night to remember. These roles span front-of-house and customer service roles to catering and managerial posts.” Rainbow also operates casinos in Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol and Teesside.
Whitbread shortlisted for energy award: Whitbread has been shortlisted in the 2016 Love Energy Savings Awards. The company is up against Denton Working Men’s Club, Ian Hazel Funerals and R&R Ice Cream in the innovative saver category. Explaining the reasons for making the shortlist, the judges said: “As part of its green efforts, Whitbread has been recognised for ensuring every new hotel and coffee shop it opens actively works to reduce its carbon footprint by cutting down on waste production, usage and water consumption.” Love Energy Savings managing director Phil Foster said: “We established the Love Energy Savings Awards to celebrate businesses’ efforts towards becoming more energy efficient, and we’re proud to see them grow even more in their second year. We hope the awards will not only give these businesses the recognition they deserve but also inspire others to make changes within their own organisation. Everyone has a part to play, and hopefully if we all work together we can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and secure a better future.”

Earlier this year, Dalata moved to the main stock markets in London and Dublin as part of its growth plans.
