Morning Briefing for pub, restaurant and food wervice operators

Thu 1st Dec 2016 - Update: Jamie Oliver, Greene King, Domino's Poland, Great Portland Estates
Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen declared bankrupt in Amsterdam: An Amsterdam court has declared Fifteen, Jamie Oliver’s training restaurant in the Dutch capital, bankrupt. The restaurant can no longer afford its 25,000 euros a month rent and owes over 200,000 euros to its landlord, Het Parool reports. The restaurant served as a training institution for troubled young people between the ages of 18 and 24 years. Many of them struggled with alcohol or drug problems. The eight young people currently training at Fifteen will be transferred to other restaurants to complete their training, according to the newspaper. Coen Alewijnse, the co-founder of the restaurant, hopes to make a restart at a cheaper location. “The financial problems have been going on for some time,” Alwijnse told the paper. “I’ve been trying to turn the tide for two-and-a-half years but I’ve regrettably not managed it. Bankruptcy is the only way the restaurant has a future.”

Great Portland Estate unveils two tenants above planned Ivy Soho Brasserie site: Great Portland Estates has announced that it has let a further 25,200 sq ft of office space in its recently completed development at 30 Broadwick Street, W1, where 7,950 square foot of restaurant space has been pre-let to Ivy Soho Brasserie. The 10,600 sq ft fifth floor has been let to pre-eminent UK gaming company Jagex Limited, while the 14,600 sq ft second floor has been let to BCG Digital Ventures, a corporate innovation, incubation and investment arm of The Boston Consulting Group. The pair of lettings equate to a cumulative rent of £2,416,090 per annum, which is 3.3% ahead of the March 2016 ERV. These two tenants join European private equity business, EQT, who pre-let the third floor earlier this year, which leaves 34,900 sq ft available on the first, fourth and sixth floors to let. Neil Thompson, executive director of GPE said, “We are delighted to build on our recent leasing success with two further high quality endorsements of this excellent Soho development. Despite only completing the building this month, we have already secured over 55% of the scheme’s gross development value – a figure we expect to improve on in the near future.”

Domino’s Pizza Poland franchises sites to former UK area manager: Domino’s Pizza Poland (DP Poland) has announced the sale and sub-franchising of four corporately owned stores in Krakow to VKF Group. VKF Group is a Polish company established and led by new Domino’s sub-franchisee Wojtek Fronczyk. Wojtek Fronczyk spent the last ten years in the UK managing Domino’s Pizza stores, during which time he was awarded Supervisor of the Year 2014 before becoming an Area Manager. Moving back to Poland in the summer of 2016 Wojtek joined the Polish Domino’s team as Area Manager for Krakow. Wojtek opened Krakow’s fifth Domino’s Pizza store in November 2016 under a management contract with DP Polska SA. For the year ended 31 December 2015 the four corporate stores being sold recorded an Ebitda loss of PLN197k equivalent to £34,000, at an exchange rate of PLN5.77:£1. Total consideration payable to DP Poland for the transactions is the net book value of PLN1,794k, equivalent to £347,000 at an exchange rate of PLN5.17:£1. Proceeds from the transactions will be settled in cash and used to fund the working capital of the company. Following this sale DP Poland will have 13 corporately managed stores and 19 sub-franchised stores. DP Poland’s growth strategy is to expand through a combination of corporately owned and sub-franchised stores. Sub-franchising is core to the Domino’s Pizza model worldwide, giving the opportunity to individuals to leverage the Domino’s Pizza System and brand and to grow their own profitable businesses. Peter Shaw, chief executive of DP Poland said: “We are delighted that VKF Group, led by sub-franchisee Wojtek Fronczyk, has acquired our 4 corporate stores in Krakow. Wojtek has worked as a highly successful Domino’s Area Manager in the UK and I am impressed by the impact he has already made working with us in Krakow since this summer. Extending sub-franchising is key to our expansion plans and I look forward to welcoming more sub-franchisees to more cities in the future.” Wojtek Fronczyk, VKF Group said: “Returning to my home town of Krakow as a Domino’s sub-franchisee has been a long-held ambition. I am delighted with the quality of the stores and the store teams that I am taking over and I look forward to realising their full potential.”

Greene King apologises for bank details breach email: Greene King has apologised to its staff after accidentally leaking their personal bank details last Thursday. Members of the Greene King’s payroll department sent an email to managed pubs notifying them of a HMRC error and explaining how they would fix it. But the e-mail, contained a list of over 2,000 bank account numbers and sort codes for some staff. Under the heading ‘briefing points for discussion with affected team members’, the letter read: “I’m contacting you to let you know that unfortunately Greene King has identified a data breach as part of a communication that was sent to pub computers yesterday explaining that HMRC had made an error in the calculation of tax codes for some people ahead of pay day today. The e-mail contained an attachment which included bank account details of some of our team members and I’m sorry to tell you that your name, account number and sort code were included in the list.” The pub then told staff to “keep a close eye on your bank account over the coming days and notify your bank should you see any suspicious activity.” After discovering their mistake, Greene King, which has now launched a full investigation, said its IT team worked through the night to delete the emails from inboxes. To compensate their staff, the company, which described the incident as “totally unacceptable” offered staff affected the option to have a 12 month subscription to an identity theft alert scheme, paid for by Greene King. A spokesman for Greene King said: “On Thursday night we discovered the bank account number and sort code details for just over 2,000 of our 44,000 team members were emailed in error to a number of our pubs earlier in the evening as part of a communication about an HMRC tax code error.”
