Social platform that helps nightclubs and bars fill their venues closes crowdfunding campaign after raising more than £103,000: Licklist, a social platform that helps nightclubs and bars fill their venue, has closed its fund-raise on crowdfunding platform Seedrs having raised more than £103,000. The company, co-founded by Brad Nobbs and Ian Hope, was offering a 7.58% equity stake as it looked to raise £100,000 to expand its operation. It has now closed the campaign having raised £103,288. The pitch stated: “Licklist is a pioneering social platform integrated with an international directory of nightclubs, bars and music festivals. We solve a two-fold problem. For 18 to 30-year-olds we provide a 360-degree solution to organising the perfect night out. For nightclubs and bars we provide innovative tools to fill a venue both cost-effectively and efficiently. With the funding in place we will assemble a sales team spearheaded by former Time Out chief commercial officer Kimberley O’Hara. The funds will allow us to build a sales operation that introduces venues not only in the UK but in Europe to the Licklist solution. We align ourselves with the likes of TripAdvisor, which dominates the market for hotel reviews, and Just Eat, which does the same for takeaway restaurants. We’re looking to do the same and dominate the market for nightlife and establish Licklist as the only brand people want to be associated with.”

City of London launches Square Mile coffee cup recycling scheme: The City of London Corporation has partnered with coffee chains and Network Rail to launch dedicated coffee cup recycling facilities in stores, offices and on the street in an effort to prevent five million cups a year going to landfill. Wendy Mead, chairman of the corporation’s environment committee, said the aim of the Square Mile challenge was to recycle half a million cups in April, adding that the City would be the “first area in the UK to undertake such a significant commitment”. The first 30 businesses with more than 500 employees to sign up to the scheme will receive a year’s free membership to collection services provided by Simply Cups, while all other businesses involved can access discounted collection rates. Last month, Whitbread-owned Costa Coffee announced it would expand its recycling scheme by collecting used cups in its 2,000 stores, which are picked up by waste management company Veolia to be recycled in a specialist plant. Starbucks is trialling a fully recyclable coffee cup – the Frugalpac. Up to seven million paper cups are disposed of in the UK every day, with fewer than 1% recycled, The Guardian reports.
Deliveroo has ‘created more than 6,000 jobs’: Deliveroo has created more than 6,000 jobs in the UK, according to a new study commissioned by the food delivery company as it reaches the fourth year since making its first delivery. The company saw UK orders increase by 650% in 2016 as it undergoes rapid expansion. The company has created 6,300 jobs since its launch, according to research by Capital Economics commissioned by Deliveroo, although the study gives no details of the average pay or hours worked in the jobs created. The study also finds that Deliveroo has generated £200m in revenue for restaurants in Britain. Alasdair Murdoch, chief executive of restaurant chain Gourmet Burger Kitchen, said Deliveroo had produced a “positive impact in a number of areas of our business, including an increase in sales”, which had “led to us employing more people right across our business”.
UK food and drink exports grew 10.5% in 2016: Total exports of food and drink grew by 10.5% in 2016 to a record figure of more than £20bn as UK manufacturers responded to rapid growth in demand for quality produce, the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has said. Exports of branded food and non-alcoholic drinks led the way in 2016 with growth of 11.5% to £5.2bn, the 16th year of consecutive growth. Excluding alcohol, the UK’s top three export categories remain chocolate, salmon and cheese, with exports of salmon up 16.4%, driven by large increases to France (up 32.2%), Ireland (up 24.6%), and Germany (up 98.9%). The US is now the second-largest export market for the UK and the largest outside Europe, with exports increasing by 13% to £2.2bn in 2016. This now means the UK’s two largest export markets, Ireland and the US, together buy more than a quarter of all UK food and drink exports. Sales to non-EU markets continued to grow at a faster rate than to the EU. However, 71.4% of food and drink, excluding alcohol, was sold to EU member states. Demand was up in every single one of the UK’s top 20 markets in 2016, with China the fastest growing market, up 51.1% on 2015 to £439.5m. Highlighted as a priority export market in the joint Government-Industry International Action Plan for Food and Drink, China’s appetite for branded UK food and non-alcoholic drinks also rose by 50% in 2016, to £84.7m. While the fall in the price of sterling has helped to boost UK export competitiveness, it has also made essential imports more expensive and the UK’s food and drink trade deficit grew 5.7% to minus £22.4bn.

The fund was launched in 2013 to kick-start pub diversification schemes run by licensees in the form of grants of up to £3,000. Support for the regional hubs will help with running costs, marketing and its small team of advisors around the UK. Heineken corporate affairs director David Paterson said: “We are delighted to build on our support of Pub is The Hub. We warmly welcome the government’s announcement last month that it will fund the organisation and we are pleased to join the government in its support and match its donation of £50,000. It recognises that great licensees and their pubs play an enormously important role in communities across the UK. With Heineken’s help, we can continue to support these small businesses with advice and small grants. Former apprentice becomes one of UK’s youngest restaurateurs with Hartlepool launch: Jack Hunter, 20, has become one of the UK’s youngest restaurant owners after opening Hunter’s Restaurant in Hartlepool. The 40-cover venue has launched in Marina’s Navigation Point offering modern British food with a “few crowd pleasers like burgers and steaks” as well as a vegan menu, all using locally sourced produce. Hunter undertook a Level 2 apprenticeship in hospitality and catering and Level 3 in professional cookery while working at Krimo’s restaurant in the town. Hunter told BDaily: “Working as an apprentice taught me how to handle responsibility. I had to learn the fundamentals fast. You have to get it right and move quickly because of the high-pressured environment of a fully working restaurant. You get rewarded for working hard. In two years as an apprentice, I moved from being a commis chef to sous chef. To get a full qualification and to work at the same time was important to me. If I didn’t have the apprenticeship, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I raised my own money and got help from my dad, a bank loan and money from other investors but the name on the lease is mine and, at the end of the day, it all rests on my shoulders. It’s always been my dream to open my own restaurant, I just didn’t think it would be this early!”

We feel the hotel will be a positive addition to the already excellent accommodation available in our local area and will help bolster our reputation as an attractive venue for events, conferences and weddings. We feel the design is eye-catching but in keeping with its surroundings and we’re proud to say it will be built to the highest environmental standards.”
