Tue 17th Mar 2020 - Coronavirus: Corbin & King, Mowgli and Center Parcs close all sites Corbin & King, Mowgli and Center Parcs close all sites: London operator Corbin & King and Indian street food concept Mowgli are the first restaurant companies to close all their sites amid the coronavirus outbreak. Corbin & King said it had closed its restaurants, which include The Wolseley in Piccadilly and The Delaunay in Holborn, until further notice. The company stated: “Under the circumstances, this move was inevitable. Our priority now is to look after our staff and ensure we remain in the best possible shape, ready to reopen as soon as possible.” Mowgli founder Nisha Katona told staff: “As we mothball our beloved Mowgli, myself and my senior management team will work without sleeping on ways in which we can honour our teams over the next few months. It is because of the loyalty, support and encouragement of you, our dear Mowglites, that we have a chance of hibernating but keeping our little corner of the economy alive and able to regerminate on any new horizon.” As a way of “clapping them from our balconies”, the brand will offer free food to all NHS workers dining in its ten sites before they close on Wednesday (18 March). Meanwhile, Center Parcs is closing all its UK villages from Friday (20 March) until Thursday, 16 April. The company posted on its website: “The safety and well-being of guests and staff is our priority and we feel this decision supports government recommendations. If you are due to visit during the above closure period we unfortunately have no option but to cancel your break. We recognise this will be disappointing news and we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in these exceptional circumstances.” Customers have the option to rebook a new date with no amendment fee plus a £100 discount or receive a full refund, the website states. Denmark-based Japanese restaurant brand Sticks ‘n’ Sushi has closed its Canary Wharf, Soho and Victoria sites in London until further notice but its other restaurants remain open. Earlier Carluccio’s warned it was “only days away” from major restaurant closures while catering group Compass issued a profit warning after the coronavirus outbreak forced it to close almost half its business. Carluccio’s chief executive Mark Jones told BBC Radio 4 programme Today that footfall had been declining on a “daily basis” and government restrictions announced on Monday meant the company would be in a “situation where sales start to decline even more rapidly”. Carluccio’s has 73 restaurants in the UK and Ireland and Jones said its London sites had suffered the biggest declines. This all came after UKHospitality and more than 200 sector chief executives called on the government to provide immediate support for businesses. In a letter to the prime minister, the trade body said unless financial support was swift, the sector was looking at “unprecedented levels of closures and job losses across the nation”. Chancellor Rishi Sunak has since announced a £330bn package to support businesses.
