KellyDeli launches multi-concept food market in partnership with Tesco: KellyDeli, owner of international sushi franchise Sushi Daily, has launched a multi-concept food market in partnership with Tesco. Called Kelly’s Market, the scheme will launch in at the Tesco store in Wokingham, Berkshire, on Wednesday (29 March), with a further nine set to open in Tesco stores across the UK in 2023. The five food concepts for customers to grab and go or click and collect in-store are CKN + BAO (Korean-fusion), Dos Mexicanas (Mexican street food), BamTuk (wok cuisine), My Little Dim Sum (Asian comfort food) and Little Moons (ice cream mochi). Kelly’s Market will launch with more than 60 menu options, including 21 vegan dishes, all of which will be prepared on-site by trained chefs each day. Among the dishes on offer will be dim sum (starting at £2.95), loaded nachos (£5.95), chicken and waffles (£7.26) and hirata bao buns (£4.55). Managing director of KellyDeli UK, Ian Roberts, said: “We’re proud to partner with the UK’s biggest retailer, Tesco, to launch Kelly’s Market, pushing the boundaries of hot serve food in-store and bringing a choice of world cuisine to consumers through multiple channels.” KellyDeli’s portfolio of Asian food brands includes Sushi Daily, which was the first business in Europe to introduce kiosks offering ready-to-eat sushi into the grocery retail space. It also includes Kelly Loves, a range of Asian grocery products, and Happy Tokyo, a new Japanese high street kiosk business. Founded by South Korean Kelly Choi, it reported UK turnover of £56,426,035 in the year to December 2021, up 138% on the £38.046,051 the year before. Profit before tax was £2,487,852 (2020: £896,543) as the company grew sites, branded as Sushi Daily, to 154 compared with 118 the year before. The company said it has achieved growth every year since it was founded in 2015 except for 2020. Choi owns 60% of parent company Jimiki, which oversees 981 franchised stores across Europe and Mexico, opening 96 kiosks in the year. In its best international year since it was founded 12 years ago, it reported sales up 27% to €446m (2020: €335m) with like-for-like sales up 12%. Choi was denied access to high school through lack of family funds and instead moved to Seoul, where she funded her own night school tuition. She later moved to Japan to immerse herself in Japanese culture – and sushi in particular. KellyDeli’s partnership with Tesco follows a similar deal between Sainsbury’s and Boparan Restaurant Group, which started rolling out last year and is now in ten Sainsbury’s stores. KellyDeli UK is included in the latest Propel Turnover & Profits Blue Book. Its turnover of £56,426,035 is the 116th highest in the database. Its pre-tax profit of £2,487,852 is the 195th highest in the database. The Blue Book ranks companies by turnover, profit and profit conversion, listing directors’ earnings for the past five years. Companies can now have an unlimited number of people receive access to Propel Premium for a year for £895 plus VAT – whether they are an operator or a supplier.
