Wed 4th Jun 2025 - Update: Boardwalk welcomes inaugural cohort of mentees, local shops, Welcome Break
Boardwalk welcomes 22 mentees to its inaugural cohort: Boardwalk, the mentoring programme dedicated to accelerating senior women in the hospitality industry into board-level positions, has announced the selection of 22 women into its inaugural 12-month programme. Launched last month, the not-for-profit initiative, which was founded by leading hospitality figures Ann Elliott, Christine Martin and Shereen Ritchie, said that the “calibre, experience, and potential of the selected mentees reflect a powerful pipeline of future board talent, ready to take their place at the decision-making table”. “We are delighted by the talent and determination of the women who applied,” said Elliott. “Every one of the 22 mentees brings a unique perspective and deep industry experience. With the support of this programme, we believe they are on a fast track to the boardroom.” The programme’s impact is further strengthened by its mentors – senior leaders from some of the most respected brands in UK hospitality, who will provide exclusive one-to-one mentoring for their carefully matched mentees. “There’s a real sense that times are changing,” said Ritchie. “Yes, we’re realistic about the challenges, but we’re incredibly optimistic too. The industry is ready. The talent is here. Now it’s about action.” Martin said: “This programme is not just about mentorship – it’s about momentum. With such high-quality mentees and mentors, we’re building a community committed to delivering short term impact and long-term change.” The 2025/2026 Boardwalk mentees are: Josie Adams, people director at Incipio Group; Vicky Barber, marketing director at Popeyes UK; Lucy Barker, operations director at Stonegate; Alice Bowyer, director food and drinks at Butcombe Group; Penny Bruce, operations director at Pub Partners, Greene King; Miranda Burgum, people director at Gail’s; Vickie Elsey, group people director at Greene King; Katie Harel, vice president marketing at Rhubarb Hospitality and Oak View Group; Karen Hodson, operations director at Warner Hotels; Suzi Hoy, head of brand and communications at Burger King UK; Kasia Koziel, head of people and talent at Green & Fortune; Laura Mimoun, chief marketing officer at Franco Manca and The Real Greek; Naddy Onions, marketing director at Prezzo Italian; Kirsten Pottinger, commercial director at TRG Concessions; Ria Pattini, marketing director at JKS Restaurants; Clare Reid, head of marketing at Brother Marcus; Louisa Richards, restaurant director at Hawksmoor; Belinda Schofield, operations support director at Butlins; Megan Trimble, marketing director at Big Table Group; Kathryn Williams, group head of sales at the Corrigan Collection; Sheri Williamson, marketing director at Bill’s Restaurants; and Hayley Whitfield, people director at Pizza Pilgrims. The Boardwalk mentoring programme said it “marks a significant step in rebalancing representation on UK hospitality boards”. At the same time, the initiative has added two more mentors to the programme, Alasdair Murdoch, chief executive of Burger King UK, and Gemma Glasson, managing director at Wahaca.

Local shops ‘in best shape for a decade’: Local shopping centres are in their “best position for a decade”, with rents and valuations finally starting to climb after years of declines. New River Reit’s 36 shopping centres and retail parks, in places such as Hastings, Dewsbury and Carlisle, rose in value by 0.6% in the year to the end of March and they are now collectively worth £897m. The Times reports it was the first time since 2016 that their values increased, although its shopping centres are still worth less than half what they were in 2009. This pushed up New River’s annual post-tax profit to £23.7m from £3m. The final dividend was lifted by a halfpenny to 3.5p per share. Rents are also improving after a tough 15 years or so, when a number of key tenants, such as BHS, Topshop and Debenhams, went bust. New River signed almost one million sq ft of new leases, with tenants agreeing to pay, on average, 17.5% more than they, or the previous tenant, were paying. “Our view is that the marketplace is in its best position for a decade,” Allan Lockhart, chief executive, said. “Our occupiers are in a much stronger position. There has been a lot of restructuring in the past five years and so the weaker retailers – and the excess competition – have left.” Shares in New River closed up 0.9%, to 80.5p.

Welcome Break reveals operators for new Nottinghamshire service station: Service station operator Welcome Break, which is owned by Applegreen, has revealed the operators that will occupy its new site in Nottinghamshire. The company received permission from Rushcliffe Borough Council in 2023 for the services on 6.2 acres of farmland at the A46/A606 Melton Road roundabout in Hickling. Welcome Break has now filed an application with the council that has revealed the businesses and eateries that will be at the new spot. Planning documents show KFC, food-to-go retailer Greggs, Starbucks and a small Waitrose shop will occupy the site, reports Nottinghamshire Live. Starbucks will serve customers from its own small building, which will have a drive-thru. The whole site is expected to create 65 jobs.
